Life on the Spectrum The Preschool Years Getting the Help and Support You Need J M Worgan 9781480026490 Books
Jo Worgan is a qualified nurse and mum to two young boys, Stephen and Tom. In 2011, Tom, the younger of the two and at the age of 3 was diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). With the support of a loving husband and father, Jo set out to find all the information she could about the condition ASD which resulted in her writing 'Life on the Spectrum. The Preschool Years. Getting the Help and Support you Need.'In this book Jo moves easily between professionals and parents and is generous enough to share all that she has learnt about being a parent with a pre-school child on the autistic spectrum. She delivers a wealth of information in such an unassuming way, for example one of the sections is: 'Help and Support on the Web.' Jo says:
"I have only recently found out about Cerebra and the wonderful services that they offer. Cerebra are a charity that helps children and their carers with neurological problems including autism. Their services include a toy lending library, a postal book lending library, advice about grants, help with Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and other disability rights, personal rights, a personal portfolio making service, they run a stress helpline and also have publications on managing stress as a carer.
"I have used their personal portfolio services. This is sometimes called a passport or personal profile. Basically it is a book that you can give to anyone who looks after your child so that they can better understand and communicate with them. The portfolio will include an introduction about your child and family, what the child likes and dislikes, favourite activities, why the child is different, how you can help the child, important information, school, their life journey, who supports them, contact information and a photo gallery. How is this created? You download and print off their booklet which you then fill in. The more information and details you give them the better. You then send it back to their Freepost address. You can post photographs with the booklet or send them separately by email. I emailed mine separately and received Tom's personal portfolio a few weeks ago and was very happy with the finished product. It contains all the information that anybody new to meeting Tom would need. It will be particularly useful for Tom's Reception class teacher and teaching assistant when starting school."
'Life on the Spectrum. The Preschool Years. Getting the Help and Support you Need' is an excellent book for any parent that even suspects their child may be showing early signs of autism. It would also be of interest to professionals. Jo's positive experience of support from the many professionals she's met sends a clear message that it's never too early to seek help.
What this author has done is pave the way so parents that follow will have a smoother path.
I will finish with her wise words:
"Never underestimate the power and knowledge that you have as a parent in being able to access and implement care in order to help your child."
And so say all of us.

Life on the Spectrum The Preschool Years Getting the Help and Support You Need J M Worgan 9781480026490 Books Reviews
I found parts of this book enlightening. I have 2 autistic grandchildren and it opened up my mind about the brush scrubbing.
The youngest still requres help but he is still a toddler. Thank you.
Although there was some information in this book that I found helpful, I did not realize that it was written by a person from England. It was more of a diary of her family and their experience in dealing with a child on the spectrum. I was looking more for a book with symptoms and characteristics of a child on the spectrum and how these children are identified and best helped.
